Helpful Social Work

These podcasts are created by Jo Fox at Child Centred Practice and Gerry Nosowska at Effective Practice. We’ve started this podcast because social work matters to us.

We hope that it will support social workers to reflect and learn, and to inspire and help others.

Each podcast is in two parts. The first explores a topic relating to social work practice, drawing on theory, evidence and experience. The second part is a conversation about what’s happening in social work at the moment, and our thoughts and reflections on that. We hope that you will enjoy listening.

10b Change and Progress

Published on 7th February 2017

As our podcast, Helpful Social Work, comes up to a year old, Jo Fox and I look back on the last twelve months in social work.

We try and avoid thinking just about what’s different (change), and look for where things have got better (progress). We talk about practice, research, education and social work policy. There are positives, despite the difficult context, but a lot still to do.

10a Organisations and Uncertainty

In the first part of our tenth podcast we start to take a look at the organisations that social workers operate in. We consider how organisations function in uncertainty and the impact that this has on practice.

In the second part of our ninth podcast we unpick the idea that we can keep doing more with less, and look at how we can work sustainably and helpfully with fewer resources. We consider social workers’ wellbeing and workload, accountability and prioritising, and how we can lobby for good social care.

In the second part of our seventh podcast we talk about how we can collaborate and thrive as one profession, despite differences, in the current context of reform and scarce resources.

7a Relationships with colleagues

Published on 28th September 2016

The first part of our seventh podcast is about our relationships with colleagues. We take a look at what makes a helpful colleague and how groups can work well together. We offer a model for discussion to help avoid group think and power issues.

6b Recording

Published on 9th September 2016

In the second part of our sixth podcast we talk about recording and the myth that ‘if it isn’t written down, it didn’t happen.’ We look at how recording can empower people, as well as supporting accountability and good practice.

6a Workload

The first part of our sixth podcast is on workload. We take a look at the evidence around how best to manage work. We also look at the impact of targets, and the importance of focusing on outcomes rather than outputs.
